It is not possible by the existing formal banking industry to accommodate with the financial inclusion based on the Human Resource capacity required for the same.

Offcourse, para banking will increase cost of providing credit to underbanked groups. Because costs to cover the risks, costs to reach to unbaked areas geographically and intermediary systems are a lot. Normally government systems forget these factors to consider on their discussion of costs.

The 3rd one may be possible; but we dont forget about the cliental group are low income and illiterate. Again social accountablility and transperancy are other areas.

Great that an Institution from India made it to the top 100. But the problem is which IIT? We have IIT Delhi, Kanpur, Roorkee, Guwahati, Karagpur, Chennai and Mumbai. All IITs put together made it cannot be right. Everyone knows in India at least that all IITs are not equal. The Times survey must make this clear. Possibly they had no clue that there were so many IITs in India. Wonder if Times survey had heard of other institution in India like BITS Pilani. Did the Times Survey take into account Alumni activities? Times survey seems to be no greater than surveys by Coffee Table Indian Mgazines such as India Today. After all ignorance is bliss

Go ICICI Go!
Along with Microfinance, other opportunities like access to technology and innovation are to be made available. That will create real prosperity not just for India to the whole world.

It's very excited to see that ICICI Bank is pushing forward with efforts to expand into the poorer classes. I traveled to India for research in the fall and talked to representatives from ICICI about these initiatives, and I'm excited to see momentum.

On a related note about funding for MFIs in general. There is a new movement on the other side of the spectrum started by Kiva.org. As a supplement or alternative to institutional capital, Kiva.org is an online marketplace where individual lenders (i.e. average people) can practice peer-to-peer lending directly to microfinance borrowers affiliated with Kiva's MFI partners. Especially for small to medium sized MFIs, this souce of funding can be an extremely valuable diversification.

Govt must do a good job to take care of SC/ST population in terms of K-12 plus higher education and use resources whatever it takes before starting on the nebulous OBC quota at the central Institutions. Thus social justice will be served who need it most.
